Chapter 17 – Veronica

I sat in my room and stared out the window. The weather is decent but it’s nothing compared to the gorgeous paradise I encountered in the Bahamas. I should be enjoying myself but I can’t. It has been a month since I returned home and I feel out of sorts. Both physically and mentally. I feel ill, I guess. My stomach is turning, I’m tired, I don’t feel like my usual self. Also, I just missed my period. I noticed this morning. I’m very worried.

I have been going round in my head trying to come up with some explanation. There’s only one that made sense. I’m dreading about it, but I have to consider it. I grab my purse and leave the room. I’m too distraught to enjoy the weather or the lengthy stroll. I’m a bundle of nerves when I finally reach the drug store. I spend quite a bit of time in the feminine hygiene aisle. I stare blankly at the shelves. I have to do this. My hand shakes as I reach out and quickly snatch a pregnancy test off the shelf.

I’m nervous and embarrassed. I make sure no one sees me as I go to the register to pay for it. The cashier puts it in a small bag which I stuff quickly in my purse. I grab my change and practically run out the doors. On the sidewalk, I have to slow down to catch my breath. I should not faint right here. That would be a disaster. I make my way home as quickly as possible. Once safely inside I make a mad dash to the bathroom.

I throw my purse on the linoleum. I pull the test out, the plastic bag makes a crackling sound. I discard that on the floor as well. I stare at the box holding it in my hands. I swallow nervously. My fingers tremble and fumble with the cardboard. Eventually I got it open. I pulled out the instructions and read them silently. After I set them down, it’s time. I pick up the test and open the paper wrapper. I take a deep breath before taking the test. I set it on the counter, set the timer on my phone and wait. My stomach is in knots. I nervously chew my fingernails. I feel like my entire life and future hang in the balance right now. In a way they do.

The timer beeps on my phone. I’m startled for a second. I reach over and turn it off. I draw a shaky breath and reach for the test. Now is the moment of truth. I hold it up and stare at it. The results couldn’t be any more clearer, the test is positive. I’m pregnant. With trembling hands I set it down and stare at the wall. I’m numb, what am I going to do? After a few moments I snap out of my daze and clean up the bathroom. I grab my purse and walk to my room.
